Former press secretary to Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, Komil Allamjonov, has been appointed representative of the Presidential Administration of Uzbekistan in the United States. The announcement was made by the president’s press secretary, Sherzod Asadov, on his Telegram channel.

Allamjonov has been named counsellor-envoy at Uzbekistan’s embassy in Washington, D.C. The appointment was signed by Saida Mirziyoyeva, head of the Presidential Administration.

Allamjonov will also retain his position as an independent adviser to the head of the Presidential Administration, to which he was appointed in June.

According to the announcement, the post of counsellor-envoy — the Administration’s representative in the U.S. — will be introduced on January 1 next year by presidential decree “to improve coordination of foreign policy and state initiatives.” The counsellor-envoy will be responsible for directly initiating and discussing issues related to major strategic investment and trade projects between Uzbekistan and the United States, as well as coordinating the work of the U.S.–Uzbek Business and Investment Council on behalf of Uzbekistan.

On the Uzbek side, the council is chaired by the president’s daughter, Saida Mirziyoyeva; on the American side, by U.S. Special Envoy for South and Central Asia Sergio Gor.

Allamjonov served as press secretary to the president of Uzbekistan from December 2017 to October 2018. He was then appointed acting director-general of the Uzbek Agency for Press and Information (UzAPI), which was later transformed into the Agency of Information and Mass Communications (AIMK). His deputy at the time was Saida Mirziyoyeva, the current head of the Presidential Administration.

In January 2020, Allamjonov and Mirziyoyeva announced their departure from AIMK and established the Public Foundation for the Support and Development of National Mass Media. Allamjonov became head of the foundation’s board of trustees, while Mirziyoyeva became its deputy chair.

In the summer of 2022, Allamjonov returned to the Presidential Administration as its deputy head, focusing on public opinion research and information policy. In August 2023, he became head of the administration’s information policy department, but was dismissed on September 30, 2024, after which he announced plans to work in the private sector. A month later, an assassination attempt was made on him. Ten people were put on trial and all received prison sentences; three principal defendants were each sentenced to 23 years. In June 2025, Allamjonov returned to government as an independent adviser to Saida Mirziyoyeva, who had become head of the Administration.
