As part of his visit to the United States, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev held meetings with members of the U.S. Congress to discuss ways to strengthen the countries’ strategic partnership. The talks took place on November 5 at the residence of the Central Asian republic’s head in Washington, the president’s press service reports.
During the meeting with members of the House of Representatives — Bill Huizenga, Carol Miller, and Sydney Kamlager-Dove — the discussion focused on parliamentary cooperation between the two nations. The dynamic development of contacts between the legislative bodies of Uzbekistan and the United States was also emphasized.
Special attention was given to the work of the Caucus on U.S.-Uzbekistan Cooperation, particularly its role in organizing the annual Uzbekistan Days in the United States, which contributes to the strengthening of bilateral relations.
The talks also addressed the active involvement of Congress in implementing high-level agreements, especially in expanding trade, investment, and cultural-humanitarian ties. Particular focus was placed on cooperation with the states of West Virginia, Michigan, and California, represented by the Congress members who met with Mirziyoyev. As a result, the sides agreed on a reciprocal visit of American politicians to Uzbekistan and the exchange of business delegations led by regional leaders.
Additionally, the president held separate talks with Senator Steve Daines, co-chair of the U.S. Senate Caucus on Central Asia. Mirziyoyev praised the Caucus’s work, noting that bilateral relations have reached a new qualitative level, with growing trade indicators and an increasing number of successful joint projects.
In recent months, agreements have been signed for record amounts, and this trend is expected to continue during the current visit to Washington. In particular, the signing of new economic documents is anticipated.
The parties also discussed cooperation with the state of Montana, represented by Senator Daines, and reached an agreement to organize a business mission from Montana to Uzbekistan.
A caucus is a legislative group formed to develop a unified course of action. The U.S. Congressional Caucus on U.S.-Uzbekistan relations was established in 2018 at the initiative of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
