A drone carrying an explosive payload detonated in western Kazakhstan, the local outlet Uralskaya Nedelya reported. The incident occurred on the morning of October 23 near the village of Kyzyl-Tal in the Burlin District of the West Kazakhstan Region.

“Roofs nearly blew off the houses,” eyewitnesses told the publication. According to the report, the crater left at the site indicates that the drone carried a powerful combat charge.

Representatives of the district administration, the emergency services, and the police are currently working at the scene. The military prosecutor’s office has opened a criminal investigation.

The regional police department said fragments of the unmanned aerial vehicle are being examined, noting that the object “was found outside the residential area.”

Earlier today, authorities in Russia’s Orenburg Region — which borders western Kazakhstan — declared a drone attack threat, according to the region’s governor, Yevgeny Solntsev, on his Telegram channel.

This is not the first time drones have been discovered in western Kazakhstan, though previous incidents involved intact aircraft.
