Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev held a telephone conversation with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky, the Akorda press service reported.

The conversation took place at Kyiv’s initiative and focused on prospects for resolving the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.

“In Kassym-Jomart Tokayev’s view, in the current extremely difficult situation it is important to approach conflict resolution in a balanced and rational manner, ensuring the preservation and protection of Ukrainian statehood. He believes that all parties should act according to the ancient wisdom that ‘a bad peace is better than a good quarrel,’” the statement said.

Tokayev noted that he fully understands the complexity of the territorial issue, calling it the most difficult in international relations and often an insurmountable obstacle to achieving a peace agreement or even a truce. “But right now, the top priority is to preserve Ukrainian statehood on the basis of inviolable international security guarantees for Ukraine,” the president stressed.

According to him, Kazakhstan intends to continue active cooperation with Ukraine in various areas of mutual interest.

Last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin called Tokayev to discuss the progress of talks with the United States on Ukraine. On August 15, a meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Putin is scheduled to take place in Alaska, where the settlement of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict is expected to be discussed.

Tokayev has repeatedly called for political dialogue on the Russia-Ukraine conflict. In an interview with the newspaper Ana tili in early January, he reiterated his position that Russia cannot be defeated on the battlefield. He also recalled that he discussed this issue in a phone conversation with Trump after the 2024 U.S. presidential election, when the Kazakh leader noted that solving this exceptionally difficult problem depended “on the will and desire of the leaders of the warring countries and, of course, on Trump himself as the leader of a world power.”

In February this year, the Kazakh leader welcomed the start of dialogue between the Russian and U.S. presidents on the situation surrounding Ukraine.
