Bilateral trade between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan reached $6.35 million in the first five months of 2025, 15.6 times more than during the same period last year, according to Asia-Plus.
Tajikistan’s Customs Service reports that exports to Kyrgyzstan totaled $1.59 million, while imports from Kyrgyzstan stood at $4.76 million. For comparison, total trade between the two countries amounted to just $405,100 from January to May 2024.
Experts attribute the sharp increase to the restoration of political relations, the resolution of border delimitation and demarcation issues, the opening of new checkpoints, and preparations for Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov’s state visit to Dushanbe, which began on July 8.
On June 30 in Cholpon-Ata, during a visit by Tajikistan’s Foreign Minister Sirojiddin Muhriddin, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to expanding economic cooperation and increasing trade to $500 million. Since the beginning of the year, 15 agreements have been approved, including on border arrangements, along with steps toward closer political and humanitarian ties. On July 7, the countries’ ministers of economy and trade agreed to develop a roadmap to boost trade volume. The plan will include measures related to the export and import of mutually significant goods, simplification of trade procedures, transportation and transit, digitization, e-commerce, and the use of economic and trade corridors.
Over the past decade, trade between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan has fluctuated:
👉 2018–2019: trade reached nearly $60 million (over $48 million in imports from Kyrgyzstan, more than $14 million in exports from Tajikistan);
👉 2020: a steady decline began;
👉 2021: $26.2 million;
👉 2022: $15 million;
👉 2023: $11.4 million;
👉 2024: approximately $11.6 million.
The agreement on the Kyrgyz-Tajik border was signed by the presidents of both countries on March 13, along with the reopening of checkpoints that had remained closed for several years. The document entered into force on March 31 following the exchange of ratification instruments.
