Volkswagen has signed a contract to begin semi-knocked-down (SKD) assembly of vehicles in Uzbekistan, partnering with Alyans Auto, a subsidiary of Uzavtosanoat. The announcement was made by Martin Sander, Member of the Board of Management for Sales, Marketing, and After Sales at Volkswagen Passenger Cars, in a post on LinkedIn.

According to Sander, Uzbekistan is on the cusp of an automotive boom driven by rising incomes and a growing middle class with a strong interest in German vehicles.

“We’re offering eight stylish sedans and spacious SUVs — exactly what Uzbek consumers are looking for,” Sander wrote.

The vehicles will be assembled using components imported from China, with Uzbekistan’s favorable logistics location enabling efficient market servicing and a reduced carbon footprint. The project will be carried out in cooperation with Alyans Auto, formerly known as Jizzakh Auto — the official distributor for Volkswagen, Škoda, and Jetta in Uzbekistan. Following a 2025 corporate audit by Volkswagen’s Business Process Description and Documentation (BPDD), the company rebranded as Alyans Auto.

According to Uzavtosanoat’s press service, the agreement was signed during the 4th Tashkent International Investment Forum. The contract includes plans to expand the model range to include modern passenger cars — from sedans to full-size crossovers. The project aims to establish new production facilities, increase localization, transfer technology, and develop the country’s automotive export capacity. Mass production is scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2025.

Volkswagen has previously operated in Uzbekistan. In 2020, Uzavtosanoat and Volkswagen Group Rus signed a deal to produce light commercial vehicles — specifically the Caddy — at the Jizzakh Auto Plant within the Jizzakh Free Economic Zone. That summer, Volkswagen vehicles went on sale in the country, followed by Škoda models later in the year. In 2023, however, Volkswagen sold its Russian business to the dealership Avilon.
