Capacity of Rogun Hydropower Plant in Tajikistan to Be Increased by 180 MW

The installed capacity of Tajikistan’s Rogun Hydropower Plant will reach 3,780 MW upon completion, according to Asia-Plus, citing Rogun HPP JSC. This marks an increase of 180 MW from earlier projections, which estimated capacity at 3,600 MW.

Each of the six hydroelectric units will have a capacity of 630 MW, enabling the plant to generate an average of 14,400 GWh of electricity per year. For comparison, all power stations in Tajikistan together produced 22,428 GWh in 2024.

Construction of the Rogun HPP will proceed in two phases:

👉 By 2028, the dam’s height is expected to reach 1,185 meters above sea level, with an installed capacity of 1,660 MW.

👉 By 2035, the dam is projected to reach 1,300 meters, and the full capacity of 3,780 MW will be achieved.

The first phase is estimated to cost $3.39 billion, with funding provided by a range of international financial institutions, including the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), European Investment Bank (EIB), Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development, OPEC Fund for International Development, and the Saudi Fund for Development, among others.

The total cost of the project is projected at approximately $6.3 billion.

Currently, two units are in operation, producing over 1.2 billion kWh in 2024—about 5.5 percent of the country's total electricity output for the year.

Rogun is Tajikistan’s largest energy project. Until recently, it was financed solely through state funds. Between 2008 and 2024, the government invested 42.5 billion somoni (around $4 billion) into its construction.

Once all six units are commissioned, Rogun is expected to become the largest hydropower plant in Central Asia.
