Russia and Tajikistan have signed a Strategic Partnership Program in the military sphere between their Defense Ministries for 2026–2030, along with an Implementation Plan extending until 2028. The agreement was reached following official talks between Presidents Vladimir Putin and Emomali Rahmon during the Tajik leader’s visit to Moscow, according to his press service.
In a statement to the press, Putin highlighted security concerns in Central Asia, particularly in light of threats emanating from Afghanistan. He reaffirmed Russia’s commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the region, including through its 201st military base in Tajikistan.
The Russian president also noted the 2023 opening of a border outpost in Tajikistan’s mountainous region. The facility, built with Russian funding, is equipped with advanced technology and weaponry.
«We agreed today to continue working in this direction,» Putin stated.
He added that both sides also committed to deepening cooperation in defense, military-technical collaboration, counterterrorism, and anti-narcotics efforts.
Rahmon also addressed regional security issues, emphasizing the close and productive partnership between the security services and law enforcement agencies of Tajikistan and Russia. He stated that this cooperation has yielded tangible results over the past year. However, he did not elaborate, merely noting that the collaboration covers a broad range of issues, including terrorism, extremism, radicalism, transnational organized crime, cybercrime, and drug trafficking.
In his closing remarks, Rahmon expressed satisfaction with the results of his talks with Putin.
«Tajikistan will continue striving to fully realize the great potential of Tajik-Russian allied and strategic relations,» he concluded.
