On November 13, a trilateral Agreement on Strategic Partnership in the Development and Transmission of «Green» Energy between Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan was signed in Baku as part of the UN Conference on Climate Change (COP29), as reported by the press service of the President of Uzbekistan.
The agreement provides for cooperation in the following key areas:
- Strengthening cooperation in the energy sector with a focus on clean and renewable energy sources
- Transmission and supply of electricity from environmentally clean sources to Europe and other regions
- Development of projects for the production and transportation of environmentally friendly hydrogen and ammonia
- Development of energy infrastructure, including examining the possibility of connecting to the Black Sea underwater power transmission line
The parties intend to work together to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in accordance with the goals of the Paris Agreement. Special attention will be paid to «green» investments in renewable energy production capacities.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev emphasized the environmental significance of the project, noting that renewable energy is a contribution to the future and a manifestation of responsibility to future generations.
Mirziyoyev stated that by 2030 Uzbekistan plans to increase the share of renewable sources to 40% and create energy storage systems with a capacity of 4.2 GW.
President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev emphasized that the agreement opens up new opportunities for integrating the energy systems of the three states, as well as for creating reliable supply corridors for environmentally friendly energy to European and other markets.
«Kazakhstan plays an extremely important role here as a major transit territory. The practical results of this agreement will also contribute to the development of the Middle Corridor as a 'green bridge' connecting our economies. Close cooperation in this key area will intensify the exchange of experience and advanced technologies between the three states, and will further strengthen our energy security,» Tokayev noted. He added that Kazakhstan has agreed with foreign partners on the implementation of «green» projects with a total capacity of 43 GW.
President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev noted that the agreement takes brotherly relations and strategic partnership between the three countries to a new level.
«The regions of Central Asia and the Caucasus act synchronously on many issues, including in the development of 'green' energy. We know about the big plans and already achieved results in creating renewable energy sources in Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan,» Aliyev said.
His aide, head of the Foreign Policy Affairs Department of the Presidential Administration Hikmet Hajiyev wrote on social network X (former Twitter) that «the project [presented in the agreement] will also be connected to the energy cable along the bottom of the Black Sea. A new green energy corridor is being formed."
