Tokayev on Ukraine Situation: «Russia is Militarily Invincible»

Kazakhstan's President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, during a meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Astana, commented on the situation in Ukraine at the guest's request, as reported by the Akorda Telegram channel.

«The fact is that Russia is militarily invincible. Further escalation of the war will lead to irreparable consequences for all humanity, especially for countries directly involved in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict,» Tokayev emphasized.

He noted that a chance for «at least a ceasefire» was missed during the 2022 Istanbul negotiations, but the possibility of achieving peace still exists.

Tokayev suggested carefully considering all peace initiatives from various states and deciding to stop military actions before discussing territorial issues. He expressed support for the peace plans proposed by China and Brazil.

The Kazakh leader mentioned that Kazakhstan maintains strategic partnership and alliance with Russia while having genuine sympathy for the Ukrainian people and their culture. He pointed out that there have never been disagreements between their states, and Kazakhstan's embassy continues to function in Kyiv.

This is not the first time Tokayev has commented on the Russian-Ukrainian conflict during talks with German politicians. Last year, he expressed hope for a ceasefire in Ukraine during a press conference with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

China and Brazil proposed peace plans for political settlement of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict in spring. Both countries suggest stopping hostilities and moving to negotiations. Chinese President Xi Jinping has previously expressed support for an international peace conference acceptable to both Kyiv and Moscow.

However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently called the Chinese-Brazilian initiative «destructive» in an interview with Brazilian media, questioning the approach of proposing initiatives without consulting Ukraine.
