President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has proposed the creation of an interfaith commission tasked with developing “peculiar commandments” for artificial intelligence (AI) systems. He made the statement at the 8th Congress of World and Traditional Religions in Astana, according to the presidential press service.
“I am convinced that religious leaders, as guardians of moral values, should take part in discussions about humanity’s digital future,” Tokayev said. “I propose establishing an Interfaith Commission on the Ethics of AI Development, which will work on a set of universal principles for the responsible use of neural networks and other breakthrough technologies.”
He clarified that the initiative involves creating “commandments for algorithms,” which would emphasize respect for human dignity, prohibition of discrimination, and oversight of decisions that have significant consequences.
The 8th Congress of World and Traditional Religious Leaders opened in Kazakhstan’s capital on September 17, with more than 100 delegations from around 60 countries participating. The Russian Orthodox Church is represented at the event by Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia.
In recent months, Tokayev has frequently addressed AI development. A significant part of his address on September 8 focused on the subject. According to the president, AI should be integrated into all spheres of life and Kazakhstan’s economy to enable a new leap forward. The first steps include adopting a Digital Code and creating a dedicated committee within the Ministry of Artificial Intelligence.
